China supports US-Iran ceasefire amid speculation over role in securing deal

China has welcomed the ceasefire between Iran and the US, amid reports that Beijing was involved in securing the two-week pause in fighting and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

"China has consistently supported a ceasefire and a resolution of disputes through diplomatic channels, and has supported mediation efforts by Pakistan and other countries," Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said today.

She added that Beijing hopes that all parties will cooperate to enable the resumption of normal maritime transport traffic through the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible.

Several media outlets have reported that China urged Iran to agree to a ceasefire in the conflict with the US and Israel in the hours before US President Donald Trump's ultimatum expired.

Mao did not confirm this directly, noting that China wanted to continue to play a constructive role in promoting peace in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, Iran's ambassador to China, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, expressed confidence that China and other countries could ensure peace in the region, the South China Morning Post reported.

At a press conference in Beijing, Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli reportedly warned that Iran would respond harshly if the US did not respect the agreements.

Beijing is considered an important ally of Tehran, in part because China buys large amounts of oil from Iran.
