French far-right leader Marine Le Pen found guilty of embezzling EU funds

The leader of the far-right in France and eight National Front MEPs were found guilty of embezzling EU funds.

Their sentences will be reported individually, French media say.

Le Pen and 24 other officials from her party were accused of embezzling more than 3 million euros of European Parliament funds to pay staff based in France between 2004 and 2016.

The defendants claimed that the money had been used legitimately.

The nine-week trial took place late last year. Prosecutors demanded that Le Pen face an immediate five-year ban from public office if found guilty.

The 56-year-old has been a three-time presidential candidate and has said that 2027 would be her last time running for the top job.

It is unclear whether the decision will affect her chances of running for president.
