Malaysia hit by a powerful earthquake, here's what the magnitude was

A strong seismic tremor with a magnitude of 7.1 was recorded in the early hours of Monday near the coast of Sabah, Malaysia, part of the island of Borneo.

Data published by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) indicates that the earthquake occurred at 00:57 local time.

The epicenter was located less than 100 kilometers northeast of the coastal city of Kota Kinabalu.

According to measurements, the tremor had a significant depth, about 620 kilometers below the earth's surface. Earthquakes at such depths usually have a more limited impact on inhabited areas.

Meanwhile, the US Tsunami Warning Center has announced that there is no risk of a tsunami as a result of this seismic event.

So far, there are no reports of casualties or serious material damage. Local authorities are closely following the situation and continue to monitor for any further developments.
