US President Donald Trump has issued a stern warning to oil companies that could take advantage of unrest in the Middle East and drive up oil prices.
"Everyone keep oil prices low. I'm watching you! You're playing the enemy's game. Don't do it!" the US president said in a post on Truth Social.
Also through a second post, the US president called on the Department of Energy to accelerate drilling for hydrocarbons.
"To the Department of Energy: drill, drill, drill. And do it NOW, I say with conviction," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
There is widespread speculation that Iran could retaliate for US attacks on its nuclear facilities by closing one of the world's busiest oil shipping lanes, the Strait of Hormuz.
About 20% of global oil and gas supplies pass through this narrow sea route in the Persian Gulf. Blocking it would have profound consequences for the global economy, disrupting international trade and sharply increasing oil prices.
