At war for 12 days/ The UN Security Council votes today on two draft resolutions

The UN Security Council is expected to vote later today on two competing draft resolutions related to the war in Iran and its impact on the entire Middle East region.

The first resolution, proposed by the Gulf states, condemns Iran's attacks on them. The draft also calls for an immediate halt to threats and attacks against countries in the region, including those carried out through proxies.

On the other hand, Russia, Iran's ally on the council, has presented an alternative draft resolution. The text does not directly mention Iran, Israel or the US, but condemns all attacks against civilians and calls on the parties to stop fighting and return to negotiations.

This is the first formal action to be considered by the Security Council since holding an emergency meeting following the outbreak of the conflict.

During that meeting, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres declared that Israeli-American airstrikes on Iran, as well as Tehran's retaliatory attacks on countries in the region, constitute a violation of the UN Charter.

Meanwhile, Iran's ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, criticized the Gulf countries, accusing them of trying to reverse the roles of aggressor and victim through a text that he described as biased and politically motivated.
