Orban against EU plan for Ukraine: It would be a declaration of war on Hungary

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has reacted sharply to the European Union's plans to accelerate Ukraine's membership process, calling such a move an "open declaration of war against Hungary."

His reaction comes after international media reported that the European Commission is considering the possibility of accelerating negotiations with Kiev, even offering a form of partial membership before the full completion of the required reforms.

According to Politico , options are being discussed in Brussels to avoid a possible veto from Budapest. Among the options mentioned are diplomatic pressure on the Hungarian government, including the involvement of US President Donald Trump , as well as the activation of Article 7 of the EU Treaty, which could lead to the suspension of Hungary's voting rights in the bloc.

In a post on the social network X, Orbán declared that Ukraine's accession by 2027 was a decision taken without respecting the will of Hungarian citizens. He added that European institutions are acting by bypassing Hungary and exerting political pressure on his government.

Hungary has maintained a critical stance towards Ukraine's rapid integration into the EU, demanding full fulfillment of criteria and guarantees for its national interests before any further steps.

The debate over Ukraine's membership is expected to remain one of the most sensitive issues on the European Union's agenda in the coming months.
