Emergency crews rushed to rescue people trapped in their homes as roads were blocked by floodwaters as torrential rains continued to lash the region.
Residents described the flooding as one of the worst weather incidents in their memory.
As the authorities sought all available resources to meet the high demands for rescue, foreign media write.
As reported, firefighters were sent to different regions of the island. In the town of Aci Sant'Antonio, several drivers were rescued after being trapped in vehicles in deep water.
Meanwhile, in Acireale, emergency crews helped rescue a resident from a house that was completely submerged in water.
