Putin interview with an American journalist, the first episode since the start of the war with Ukraine

The Kremlin confirmed on Wednesday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been interviewed by former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. This is the first interview that Mr. Putin has conducted with a Western journalist since the start of the aggression against Ukraine two years ago.
Carlson released a video from Moscow on Tuesday in which he said he was going to interview President Putin. Carlson claimed that Western journalists had interviewed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy many times, but had not "bothered" to interview the President of Russia.
Since starting the war against Ukraine in February 2022, Mr. Putin has significantly limited contacts with the international media. Russian authorities have cracked down on the media, forcing several independent Russian media outlets to close, blocking some of them, and ordering a number of foreign reporters to leave the country.
Two journalists who work for two American media, Evan Gershkovich of the Wall Street Journal and Alsu Kurmasheva who works for Radio Free Europe, have been imprisoned for charges they have not accepted.
Western journalists were invited to President Putin's annual press conference in December, the first since the war began, but only two were given the chance to ask a question.
President Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters that the reason Tucker Carlson was chosen for the interview is that "he has a different attitude" than other English-language media outlets.
Mr. Peskov rejected journalist Carlson's suggestion that no Western journalist had sent a request to interview President Putin. He said the Kremlin had received many requests from major Western television networks and newspapers, which, he claimed, "have taken a one-sided stance."
According to the spokesman Peskov, Mr. Carlson's position "is in no way pro-Russia, nor pro-Ukraine, but it is pro-American."
The Associated Press news agency is among the media that has requested an interview with President Putin.
In the video released, Mr. Carlson announced that the interview with Mr. Putin will be shared for free on his website and on the X platform, formerly known as Twitter. Mr. Carlson was fired from the Fox News network in April.
On Wednesday, Russian state media widely covered Mr. Carlson's visit.
Vladimir Solovyev, one of Russia's most popular presenters, said the interview would "overcome the blockade and narrative that exists" in Western media, which, he said, focuses on "Vladimir Putin's unprovoked attack on Ukraine".
Tucker Carlson worked at the Fox News television network for more than a decade and hosted a program where he discussed conspiracy theories about Russia and the January 6 attack on the Capitol, among other things. The Fox News network did not give any explanation for his dismissal./ VOA
