The island of Crete is facing a new wave of migrant arrivals from North African countries. In the last 24 hours alone, some 286 migrants have arrived on the island's southern coast in dinghies and small boats. Greek authorities warn that Crete risks becoming the main entry point to the EU, while humanitarian organizations raise the alarm about the increasing risk of tragedies in the Mediterranean.
The island of Crete is facing a new wave of arrivals from migrants, mainly from Libya and other North African countries.
According to reports, around 286 migrants have arrived in the last 24 hours alone on the southern coast of the island in dinghies and small boats.
The Greek Coast Guard has conducted several rescue operations near the area of Kali Limenes and Hersklion, where the migrants were then transported to temporary reception centers.
Many of them have stated that the journey from the coast of Libya lasted more than two days and was carried out in extremely dangerous conditions.
Greek authorities are concerned that Crete is becoming the main entry point for migrants to the European Union, following the strengthening of controls in the Aegean Sea.
According to United Nations data, thousands of people have arrived on the island during the first months of 2026 alone.
Greek Minister for Maritime Affairs, Vasilis Kikilias, stated that the government will increase maritime patrols, the use of drones and coast guard personnel to control the situation.
Meanwhile, humanitarian organizations warn of the risk of increasing casualties in the Mediterranean, as many of the vessels are dilapidated and overloaded.
Just a few months ago, dozens of migrants lost their lives after a boat sank off the coast of Crete.
Migration experts predict that flows could increase further during the summer, due to more favorable weather conditions and ongoing crises in Africa and the Middle East.
