Egypt says "no" to the Israeli opposition leader's proposal to take over the administration of the Gaza Strip, calling it an unacceptable idea that contradicts the Egyptian and Arab position on the Palestinian issue.
"Any idea or proposal that bypasses the data of the Egyptian and Arab position (on Gaza) (…) is rejected and unacceptable," Foreign Ministry spokesman Tamim Khalaf said, as reported by the official Egyptian news agency MENA, a day after the proposal made by Israeli opposition leader and former Prime Minister Yair Lapid.
Lapid proposed yesterday that Cairo take control of the Gaza Strip for eight years, after the war between Israel and Hamas ends, in exchange for significant debt relief.
Khalaf added that any proposal that bypasses the terms of Israeli withdrawal from Palestinian territories and the creation of an independent Palestinian state would be a "half-measure" that risks prolonging the conflict rather than resolving it.
Furthermore, he underlined the “inseparable link” between the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, as integral parts of the Palestinian territories that should be under “full Palestinian sovereignty and administration.”
