Scandal in Turkey, 152 referees involved in sports betting revealed

Turkish football is not experiencing a moment of peace and scandals follow one another. From presidents punching referees on the pitch, to referees exploding and talking about vindictive cuts from their matches.

The latest scandal to be uncovered appears to be the biggest.

Ibrahim Hatciosmanoglu, the head of the Federation, announced at a press conference today that hundreds of Turkish referees are accused of illegal betting. In fact, out of 571 TFF referees, 371 were found to have accounts with online betting companies.

And of those, 152 were actively gambling. Of course, this raises even more concerns about the corruption that has been rampant in the neighboring country in recent years.

"We are determined to cleanse our football of any trace of corruption. We will not make any exceptions. Decisions on the necessary sanctions will be taken as of today," Hatziosmanoglu said.

Without specifying their identities, the Turk said that 22 high-level referees and supervisors. One referee has a betting history of 18,227 points and 42 others have placed bets on more than 1,000 matches each.
