Spain demands complete suspension of EU-Israel association agreement: International law violated

Spain will ask the European Union on Tuesday, April 21, to completely suspend the association agreement with Israel, arguing that the Israeli government "violates international law", Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced.
"The Spanish government this Tuesday will present to Brussels a proposal to cancel the association agreement with Israel, because a government that violates international law cannot be a partner of the European Union," Sánchez declared during a pre-election rally in Andalusia.
The EU-Israel Association Agreement, which entered into force in 2000, includes a clause relating to respect for human rights.
Spain first challenged this agreement in February 2024, when Sánchez and the then Prime Minister of Ireland sent a joint letter to the European Commission, requesting an assessment of Israel's compliance with its human rights obligations following the start of the war in Gaza.
Since then, Sánchez's stance has gradually hardened, particularly on the war in Lebanon, leading up to today's announcement. The move follows a letter sent on Friday by Ireland, Slovenia and Spain, calling for "the EU-Israel association agreement to be examined at the next Foreign Affairs Council meeting."
