'Preliminary findings' suggest the suspect who shot at the White House Correspondents' Dinner was targeting Donald Trump and officials in his administration.

Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche told NBC News' "Meet the Press": "We're still investigating a motive, and that's something that will necessarily take at least a few days. We believe he targeted administration officials in this attack, attempted attack, but that's again, very preliminary."

Those officials "likely" include the US president, Blanche added.

Blanche went on to say that she does not believe the suspect is cooperating with the investigation.

He will be charged Monday in federal court with assault on a federal officer, firing a firearm and attempting to murder a federal officer, Blanche said, adding that he did not know if there was an Iranian connection to the attack.

Investigators believe the suspect traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago and then from Chicago to Washington, D.C. by train, before checking into the hotel where the dinner was held, Blanche added.

He stressed that investigators were looking into reports that the suspect had "ready" the gun somewhere in the hotel, but that he "hadn't gone very far."

His statements come after tension and panic in Washington, DC on the evening of April 25, after gunshots were reported near a security checkpoint outside the hall where the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner was being held.

President Donald Trump, along with First Lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance, were urgently evacuated from the scene by US Secret Service agents.

While hundreds of high-profile guests faced moments of fear and uncertainty.

Authorities have arrested a suspect, identified as a 31-year-old man from California, who is believed to have acted alone.
