Fire at elderly care center, many victims and injured

A large number of people were killed and many more were injured when a fire broke out at a senior center in Fall River, Massachusetts, on Sunday (local time), a spokesman for the state fire department said Sunday.

"We are not releasing an exact number yet as we await updates on the health status of some of the patients. This is a terrible tragedy for the city of Fall River and the families affected. Our hearts are with them this morning," Jake Work, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Fire Department, said in an email to Reuters.

He said about 50 firefighters responded to the incident and tried to put out the fire at the Gabriel House senior center, where about 70 people were staying.

Firefighters rescued many residents, but found others dead at the scene, while many others were taken to hospitals, he added. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
