The level of non-performing loans decreases

Non-performing loans in Albania fell to 3.8% at the end of 2025, the lowest level since 2008, while the total loan portfolio reached 943.5 billion lek.
Albanians are regularly fulfilling their loan repayments. Bank of Albania data shows that the level of non-performing loans fell to 3.8% at the end of 2025, from 4.17% a year earlier. For the first time since 2008, the share of non-performing loans fell below the 4% level.
The decline in non-performing loans during December is also related to the cleaning of banks' portfolios from bad loans, taken off the balance sheets before the annual financial statement closing. At the same time, the loan portfolio increased by over 18 billion lek in the last month of the year alone.
However, in terms of value, non-performing loans marked a slight increase. At the end of 2025, they were estimated at around 35.9 billion lek, up from 34.8 billion lek at the end of 2024, indicating that a portion of clients continue to face difficulties in meeting their financial obligations.
In total, the credit portfolio for the economy reached 943.5 billion lek at the end of 2025, marking an annual growth of 12.9%. The growth rate accelerated compared to 2024, when credit expansion was 12.3%.
The strong growth in lending, mainly in the individual segment, shows that Albanians are not avoiding loans, despite the Bank of Albania's measures to slow down financing rates, mainly in the real estate sector.
