Ancient galactic nuclei discovered. The space telescope has managed to observe 31 quasars, which are located very far away and are powered by colossal black holes, two of which are the oldest ever seen by humanity. Their age is dated to about 670 million years, when the Universe was just born in astronomical terms. They shine very brightly; the light and energy they emit is comparable to that of a thousand billion suns.
The result of the work of a large international team has been published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics and is the fruit of the work of Euclid, the telescope that began operation in 2023, with extraordinary technical capabilities.
Quasars represent a phase in the life of a galaxy during which the black hole at its center absorbs vast amounts of matter, releasing enormous amounts of energy at the same time. At this stage, the galaxy's core becomes so bright that it obscures everything else, exceeding the brightness of the entire galaxy by hundreds or thousands of times.
The authors explain that it is very difficult to observe such ancient quasars, because they are rare, but the current result is only the tip of the iceberg, as Euclid will greatly help science, a fairly new mission, but equally successful so far.
