FORMULA 1/ Rain is expected in Sepang, here are the wet track specialists
No Formula 1 race has yet been held in the rain in 2026, but the predictions for this weekend in Sepang make such a scenario very likely.
The heat, humidity and downpours typical of Malaysia can turn the Grand Prix into a real test for drivers. In wet conditions, braking, trajectories, reference points and the way the gas is used change. This is where talent and experience can make the difference.
VERSHTAPEN, MASTER OF THE RAIN
Max Verstappen is among the first names that come to mind. The Dutchman has given some of the strongest performances of his career on wet tracks. At Interlagos, in 2016, he achieved one of the most spectacular reversals of his career, climbing from 16th to third. In 2024, also in Brazil, he started 17th and won in the rain, in a race that had a great weight in the fight for the title. Sepang also has special memories for Verstappen. In 2017 he won here, while in the wet tests he had previously shown the pace.
HAMILTON, ANOTHER SPECIALIST
Lewis Hamilton is another big name in wet conditions. His victory at Silverstone in 2008, by more than a minute, remains one of the most famous examples. In Brazil 2016 he won in very difficult conditions, while in Turkey 2020 he managed an extremely slippery track perfectly. With only one stop and intermedium tyres until the end, he won the race and secured his seventh world title.
ALONSO AND NORRIS, EXPERIENCE AND LESSONS
Fernando Alonso has a special history with Sepang. In 2012, with an unpopular Ferrari, the Spaniard won after a rain-affected race, beating Sergio Perez's Sauber. Lando Norris is also a driver to keep an eye on. In Sochi 2021 he missed out on a potential victory after staying on the track with slick tires as the rain increased. However, the bitter experience helped him grow and at Silverstone 2025 he showed prudence in variable conditions, winning his first race on home soil.
ATTENTION FROM ANTONEL
The Italian has yet to race in a major wet F1 race and is unfamiliar with the Sepang track. However, the rain is no stranger to him. Since the junior categories, Antonel has shown particular skills in low-grip conditions. At Spa, in 2023, he won a Formula Regional race in heavy rain. After a difficult weekend in Baku, where he started 16th and finished fifth, a wet race in Sepang would give him the opportunity to show another aspect of his talent.
For Antonelli it would be an important test: not to immediately compare himself to the greatest rain specialists, but to show that his championship lead can be sustained even in the most difficult racing conditions. And with the number 12 of Ayrton Senna in his car, another wet track legend, a Sepang in the rain would undoubtedly be a symbolic scenario.
