An Iranian man who beheaded his 17-year-old wife has been sentenced to eight years in prison. Images of Sajjad Heydari holding the woman's severed head after a so-called "honor killing" last year sparked widespread outrage. A spokesman for the judiciary said the reduced sentence was because Mona's parents had "forgiven" her for the killing rather than seeking revenge.

Mona was married to her husband at the age of 12 and gave birth to their son when she was only 14. Local media reported that she had fled to Turkey after being abused by her husband, who had repeatedly refused her request for a divorce.

She had returned to Iran days before her murder last February, after receiving assurances from her family that she would be safe. Judiciary spokesman Massoud Setayeshi told reporters on Wednesday that Sajjad Heydari had been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for murder and another eight months for assault.

He explained that the decision was in line with Iranian law, which stipulates that intentional homicide is punishable by death unless the victim's family forgives the killer. Mona's brother-in-law was sentenced to 45 months for complicity in murder, he said. The gruesome killing prompted fresh calls in Iran for a law aimed at preventing domestic violence.
