They met in 1795 when the young general Napoleon was 26 and Josephine (or Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de la Pagerie) was 32.
He was infatuated with her and she became his girlfriend soon after. They married a year later in 1796. Their love was turbulent and passionate, especially for Napoleon.
He often wrote about his "adorable Josephine" when he was away on a campaign, sometimes just off his horse. Napoleon wrote numerous letters to Josephine, some of which were quite erotic.
