We are currently 5 billion people over capacity, new study: Earth cannot support

Scientists warn: Earth cannot sustain population growth indefinitely

The world's population has now surpassed 8.3 billion, but a new study warns that the Earth may not be able to support such a large number of people in the long term. According to researchers, natural limits have been exceeded for decades and the consequences are becoming increasingly apparent.

The study, led by researchers at Flinders University, analyzed historical data on population and resource consumption since 1000 AD, to understand the relationship between humanity and the planet.

For many centuries, population growth was in relative equilibrium with the environment. As the number of people increased, technological development and natural mechanisms helped maintain this balance.

But this situation changed after the 1950s, with the rapid growth of population and consumption. According to researchers, since the 1960s a “negative demographic phase” has begun, where population growth is no longer accompanied by a sustainable increase in resources.

Although population growth has slowed today, it is projected to peak in the coming decades, at around 11.7 to 12.4 billion people, before beginning to decline.

Fossil fuels "hid" the problem

A key factor driving this crisis is the massive use of fossil fuels. Energy from oil and gas has enabled huge increases in food and industrial production, creating the illusion that growth can continue indefinitely.

In reality, the researchers point out that this is only a temporary extension of natural limits. According to them, a sustainable global population would be around 2.5 billion people, in order to maintain a good standard of living without exceeding ecological limits.

Disputes and warnings

However, this assessment is not unanimous. Some scientists believe that the Earth could support a larger population, depending on how resources are managed.

Despite the debates, the main message remains the same: the current consumption pattern is not sustainable. Experts emphasize that it is not about drastically reducing the population, but about changing the way we use energy, water, land and natural resources.

According to them, the decisions that will be made in the coming decades will be crucial for the future of humanity and for the survival of the ecosystems that support life on the planet.
