US-Iran talks begin in Switzerland, negotiating teams meet
US and Pakistani officials met ahead of peace talks between Washington and Tehran that begin today in Switzerland. The two countries are seeking a lasting end to their war. US Vice President JD Vance and envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the army chief.
The US and Iran had agreed to a 60-day ceasefire for negotiations, but Tehran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Saturday declared the Strait of Hormuz closed in response to Israeli attacks on Lebanon, although the US military said commercial ships continued to operate.
These developments could complicate talks in which both sides want to advance a temporary agreement brokered by Pakistan and signed on Wednesday by Presidents Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian to end a nearly four-month war.
