The US Department of State (DASH) has published the report for the Foreign Relations Committee in the United States Senate, explaining the reasons for the nomination of Eric Wendt as ambassador to Albania.
According to the document, Wendt, a retired lieutenant general, is considered a candidate with extensive experience in leading complex military and inter-institutional structures, as well as direct knowledge of the European region and Albania.
He currently serves as a professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, where he teaches command and leadership, and during his 34-year military career he has held a number of senior leadership roles.
One of the main elements highlighted in the report is his role in NATO, where as commander of the Special Operations Headquarters he led all of the Alliance's special forces, including Albanian units, collaborating directly with leaders and troops in Albania.
Wendt also served in Afghanistan as deputy regional commander, overseeing operations that included Albanian troops, and had an important role at the State Department, where for two years he was part of the US Embassy in Jerusalem and led an eight-nation coalition as security coordinator between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
The report highlights that his ability to manage multinational and inter-institutional structures, as well as experience in international operations and security diplomacy, make him suitable for the post in Tirana.
Wendt is a graduate of the University of California at Santa Barbara and the Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, and is fluent in Arabic and Korean.
He is also the recipient of a number of high decorations, including the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and other important awards from American institutions.
According to the State Department, the combination of military experience, regional expertise, and leadership skills positions Wendt as a strong candidate to represent American interests in Albania.
