Protests in Albania reach Vienna, diaspora meets Austrian Chancellor and demands

A group of protest coordinators and members of the Albanian diaspora in Austria held a series of meetings today at the highest institutions of the Austrian state, with a clear message: the students and young people protesting in Tirana are not alone.

The delegation met face to face with the Federal Chancellor of Austria, Christian Stocker, to whom it personally delivered the official letter of the diaspora and directly presented its concerns about the situation in Albania.

In the Austrian Parliament, the delegation met with representatives of four parties: ÖVP, SPÖ, NEOS and the Greens (Grüne). Contacts were exchanged with representatives of NEOS, ÖVP and SPÖ to continue communication.

At the same time, the letter was also delivered to the secretary of the Federal President of Austria, who assured that he would forward it directly to the President.

What the diaspora wants:

In a letter to Chancellor Christian Stocker, the government and MPs, the diaspora expresses deep concern over reports of disproportionate use of force against protesters, interventions by persons without police insignia, violations of the rights of detainees, attacks on first aid points, as well as public threats against students and their families. Attached to the letter is a 146-page dossier with reports, videos and sources, prepared by lawyer Dea Nini.

The diaspora calls on Austrian institutions to:

– a parliamentary interpellation in the Austrian Parliament on the violence against protesters;
– for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to raise the issue and request an official position from the Albanian authorities;
– for Austria to be a voice in the European Parliament and the European Commission, so that respect for human rights has weight in the accession negotiations;
– independent monitoring of judicial processes against students and minors.
