Barcelona hosts Dortmund tomorrow evening at "Montjuïc" in the first leg of the Champions League quarterfinals.

This will not be the first time that the two clubs face each other in this edition of the Champions League. They faced each other last December in the sixth match of the Champions League group stage and that is one reason why they are well known. The other reason has to do with their respective coaches. Because Flik (Barcelona) and Niko Kovac (Dortmund) are friends and former teammates. They have a close shared past.

They are connected by Bayern Munich. Although good friends, they also have differences. It is in the results from which it can be noted that the "apprentice" Flik has surpassed his teacher Niko Kovac. The former Croatian midfielder, 53 years old, took the reins of Bayern Munich in July 2018. His first season, 2018-2019, was very successful: he won the Bundesliga, the German Super Cup and the German Cup with a team that, among others, included names such as Lewandowski, Gnabry, Hummels, Coman, Kimmich, Neuer, Alcantara... A year later, the current Dortmund coach, who had previously managed Eintracht Frankfurt and his country's national team, asked Hansi Flik to join his technical staff.

The current Barcelona coach was unemployed at the time, having finished his experience as general director of Hoffenheim. Both designed a Bayern that should continue on its path to trophies. But in November 2019, after a painful defeat (5-1) against Frankfurt, the Bavarian board dismissed coach Kovac, despite his success last season. Meanwhile, Bayern in the 2019-2020 season was in third place, when only 10 matches had been played. Kovac and Flick stayed in charge at Bayern for only 16 matches.

FLIK'S 6 TROPHIES –  After the Croatian was fired, the Bayern board decided to take a gamble, entrusting the leadership of the team to the Croatian's assistant. Flik was appointed head coach. The German coach managed to lift Bayern up, declaring them champions again in an unforgettable season. In the 2019-'20 season, the Bavarians won the Champions League, the Bundesliga and the German Cup. And in the 2020-'21 season they won the "Club World Cup", the European Super Cup and the German Super Cup (they reached the six titles).

After this triumphant phase, which ended in the summer of 2021 after 85 matches, the current Barça coach took charge of the German national team, which he led in 25 matches, until September 2023. After this experience, he was without a team, preparing for Joan Laporta's call-up to Barcelona last summer. Kovac, for his part, signed in the summer of 2020 for Monaco and then for Wolfsburg.

In February this year, he joined Dortmund, who had sacked Nuri Sahin. The Croatian has managed Dortmund in 12 games, with a record of six wins, two draws and four losses. This Wednesday, in “Montjuïc”, the two friends and former schoolmates will meet again. “I am happy. It is beautiful and exciting because we work together, he was my assistant and now we will compete against each other. Barcelona is a big club, a big team, with fantastic players”, said Kovac when it was confirmed that he will face Flik in the quarter-finals of the Champions League. / Panorama
