Cuban authorities will have to reach an agreement with Washington if they want to avoid a humanitarian crisis, US President Donald Trump warned.

Earlier this week, Trump signed an executive order to impose tariffs on goods from any country that sells oil to Cuba, further strengthening an embargo against the Caribbean nation that dates back to the 1960s.

The move comes after Washington arrested Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro last month, as his country had served as Havana's main source of oil.

Mexico had increased oil supplies to Cuba in recent weeks, while President Claudia Sheinbaum warned on Friday that the US president's order could "cause a large-scale humanitarian crisis, directly affecting hospitals, food supplies and other basic services for the Cuban people."

When reporters aboard Air Force One asked him Saturday about Sheinbaum's comment, Trump said: "Well, it doesn't have to be a humanitarian crisis. I think they would probably come to us and they would want to make a deal. So Cuba would be free again."

"We have a very bad situation for Cuba. They have no money. They have no oil... They lived on Venezuelan money and oil, and none of that is coming now," he said.

The US President has expressed confidence that the parties will reach an agreement and that Washington will be "kind" to Havana.

Trump did not explain what specific concessions he wants from the Cuban government, saying only that "we have a lot of people in the United States right now who would like to go back to Cuba and we would like to resolve this issue."

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Washington of “economic strangulation” of Cuba on Saturday. She reiterated Moscow’s opposition to unilateral sanctions that have not been approved by the UN, expressing confidence that Havana will be able to overcome its economic difficulties.
