TikTok fined £12.7m for breaching child safety rules

The social network TikTok will pay a fine of 12.7 million pounds in the United Kingdom for violating child safety rules.

The fine was imposed in 2023 by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), the British authority that oversees the protection of personal data.

According to the ICO, TikTok had not done enough to prevent the use of the platform by children under the age of 13 and to ensure the appropriate use of their data.

The authority estimated that in 2020 up to 1.75 million children under 13 in the UK could have used TikTok, even though the platform's rules did not allow the creation of accounts by this age group.

TikTok initially contested the fine, but has now withdrawn its appeal, so it must pay it.

TikTok has also dropped a complaint about how it uses the personal data of 13-17 year olds to suggest videos on the platform.

TikTok said it disagreed with the decision, but stressed that it relates to the period 2018–2020 and that it has since taken new measures for child safety.
