Signal CEO strengthens app security after US administration blunder

Signal CEO Meredith Whitaker today highlighted the messaging app's security benefits after senior US administration officials mistakenly included a journalist in an encrypted chat room they were using to discuss an upcoming US strike on Yemen's Houthis.

She did not directly address the error, which Democratic lawmakers said was a violation of US national security, Reuters reports.

Whitaker described the app as the "gold standard in private communications," highlighting Signal's security advantages over the messaging app WhatsApp, owned by Meta.

“We are open source, non-profit, and we develop and implement (end-to-end encryption) and privacy-preserving technology in our system to protect metadata and message content,” she said.

Signal is becoming popular in Europe and the United States as an alternative to WhatsApp because it collects very little data on its users, the agency said.

According to data from market intelligence company Sensor Tower, signal downloads in the US in the first three months of 2025 increased by 16 percent compared to the previous quarter and 25 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

In a February interview with Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, Whitaker said Signal is a more secure alternative because WhatsApp collects metadata that can be used to see who is messaging whom and how often.
