"40 incidents against journalists"/ FNSH pushed and obstructed media

The Albanian Journalists Association (AGSH) has strongly condemned the State Police's intervention against journalists and television crews during today's protest in front of the Prime Minister's Office in Tirana. The association considers the removal and obstruction of media outlets as a direct violation of press freedom and citizens' right to be informed.

The reaction comes after police officers demanded the removal of film crews from the area in front of the Prime Minister's Office, while a student protest was taking place. During the intervention, a News24 journalist verbally clashed with the police, demanding explanations for the restriction of reporting from the field.

According to the AGSH, 40 incidents against media workers have been documented in recent days, including cases of violence, threats, hitting with rubber bullets, and obstruction in the performance of their duties.

The Association accuses the State Police of setting up security cordons to block journalists, even in cases where events take place hundreds of meters away from them.

"This is not protection of public order. This is a direct obstruction of media freedom and the right of citizens to be informed," AGSH emphasizes.

The association demands that the Director General of the State Police, Skënder Hita, be held accountable for the actions of the officers he leads, emphasizing that the continued obstruction of journalists cannot be justified.

"There can no longer be any excuses for the continued obstruction of journalists and the violation of their fundamental rights," the response states.

AGSH also calls on Albanian media and editorial directors to publicly react to the violence and obstruction of journalists while reporting on the protests.

"The silence of the media in the face of violence against their journalists is an abandonment of those who risk their personal safety every day to inform the public," the statement concludes.

The full response of the AGSH:

The Journalists' Association of Albania (AGSH) strongly condemns the actions of the State Police, which continues to unacceptably obstruct journalists and television crews in the exercise of their duties.

While the events unfold hundreds of meters away, the State Police set up cordons to block journalists, denying them the opportunity to document and report what is happening.

This is not protection of public order. This is a direct obstruction of media freedom and the right of citizens to be informed.

After 40 documented incidents in recent days, where journalists have been raped, threatened, hit with rubber bullets and systematically obstructed by police officers, this situation is intolerable.

The Director General of the State Police must be held accountable for the actions of the structures he leads. There can no longer be any excuses for the continued obstruction of journalists and the violation of their fundamental rights.

AGSH calls on all Albanian media outlets and editorial directors to react publicly and unequivocally to the violence and obstruction of their journalists.

The silence of the media in the face of violence against their journalists is an abandonment of those who risk their personal safety every day to inform the public.
