26 years since the tragedy of Otranto, the event where 81 Albanians lost their lives

Today marks 26 years since the tragedy where the Albanian ship "Katri i Radë" was sunk in the Strait of Otranto by the Italian naval forces. On March 28, 1997, 81 Albanians lost their lives, mostly women and children, unprotected from the cold inside the ship. Today, 23 victims still remain without a grave, while only 61 others could survive the tragedy of Otranto.
The ship with 115 Albanians on board was sailing towards Italy. In order to block the illegal entry of immigrants who wanted to escape from the 1997 riots, the ship "Kateri i Rada" was hit by the warship "Sibilla". Those who could not swim tried to board the ship, but many women and children drowned because they could not get out because they were in the inner parts of it.
After six months, the authorities pulled out the sunken ship, "Kateri i Rada" from the bottom of the sea, where some of the drowned are found inside it. The commander of the ship Sibilla was sentenced to only 2 years in prison, while the Albanian commander of the ship Kater i Radës was sentenced to 3 years in prison.
