28 years after the Otranto tragedy, the families of the victims: The Albanian state has abandoned us, the Italians made fun of us!

They claim that the trials have continued for years, as 80 heirs were not even included in the list of those who should be compensated. The family members claim that Albanian lawyers have also benefited from this tragedy, as they seek help to take the case to Strasbourg. But, again, the Albanian state does not help them!
Next March, it will be 28 years since the tragedy of Otranto. The event took place on March 28, 1997, where the Albanian ship "Katri i Radës" was sunk in the Strait of Otranto by the Italian naval forces. On board the ship were about 140 people, of which 81 lost their lives. The ship was destined for Brindisi, Italy, with the goal of a better life. Most of the drowned were women and children who were inside the ship and had no chance to escape.
To avoid the illegal entry of immigrants, the Italian naval forces immediately proceeded to block the ship, but during the intervention the Italian ship "Sibilla" collided with the "Katri e Rada" sinking it.
The families of the victims gathered in Vlora, where Fiks Fare interviewed some of them. Hetija Kaja lost her 22-year-old son at the time. "I have been waiting for him for 5 years, I have not left the house for a single day. Now that he is 28 years old, they are also drinking his blood. No government has stood by us, we have been lied to by these associations, from the first lawyer Natasha Shehu but also Pushime Çala. Some have taken our signatures, taken them to lawyers in Italy, Polverini or even Úngjëll Agaçi. He left him as soon as he became Rama's adviser. The Italian took it, but he didn't put much into it. I have not benefited from anything" says Hetije.
Meanwhile, Murat Ferko has lost his wife and 2 sons. "That Natasha came and gave us some money in hand. She left and the Holiday came. Again no solution. We only ask for justice and help from the state. We haven't received it so far," says Murati.
Fiksi also spoke with Vitore Tahiraj, who lost her husband as a result of the tragedy. "He helped two children who were on that ship. The survivors told me. Now they tell us that your husband was not there. We have taken the documents, all of them. Now the Appeal of Leča did not give us the reward. No Albanian official ever came to the process. We have only left the expenses up and down Albania and Italy what they would receive," he says.
Ganimete Deliaj lost his brother, his brother's daughter-in-law and his nephew, who was 16 at the time. "A door was closed to us. We have done dozens of trials. They gave it to us once. They recognized me as an heir. Not my mother. They have also left another child who was traumatized by that event and lives on 130,000 old lek per month," says Ganimetja, adding that all the names mentioned only got rich.
Meanwhile, Elta Roshi has lost her uncle and her uncle's son, who was only 2 years old at the time. "My father, who attended every session, passed away and now I follow him by proxy. Two decisions were given, from the first instance and the appeal in Leçe, where only a small part won the trials," says Elta. According to her, the reason why they turned to Fiks Fare is that they want to take the case to the Human Rights Court in Strasbourg.
According to Elta, most of the family members of the victims have lost the trials, dozens more have not been included in the lawsuit because of the names. For this reason, for a good coordination of the whole process, they ask that the state help them, assist them with a legal office or even with the extraction of accurate data from the Civil Registry as well as with correspondences with the Italian state, where the court proceedings were lost.
Fiks Fare contacted the Ministry of Justice for the possibility of assistance in taking this case to Strasbourg. However, the officials of this institution said that the "Free Legal Aid" office is only for within the territory of Albania. Fiksi also turned to the People's Advocate, but this institution also replied that "it is impossible for them to help them in Strasbourg"!
