Antimafia dismantles Italian-Albanian cocaine trafficking organization, 9

The Italian anti-mafia dismantles the Italian-Albanian network of cocaine and other hard drugs trafficking in the Tuscany region.

9 people have been arrested, most of them Albanians, as the investigation took more than two years, with wiretapping and dismantling the scheme. The organization was led by two Albanians and the genesis was the seizure of a 23 kg shipment of cocaine in 2023. The traffic was camouflaged through transport trucks and sea.

"Acting on behalf of the Public Prosecutor's Office, the Florence Anti-Mafia District Directorate, the Florence Guardia di Finanza Provincial Command - Florence Economic and Financial Police Unit and the Central Service for the Investigation of Organized Crime (SCICO) have executed, between the provinces of Florence and Siena, a preliminary detention order issued by the Florence Preliminary Investigation Judge, who ordered nine arrests (eight pre-trial detention in prison, one under house arrest) against individuals seriously suspected of belonging to an Italian-Albanian criminal organization dedicated to drug trafficking," writes the media of the neighboring country, referring to the authorities.

The investigation, which was also of a technical nature and supported by the checks carried out in the territory, began with the seizure of 20 kilograms of cocaine, the possession of which for trafficking was attributed to two individuals (an Italian citizen and an Albanian citizen), arrested in April 2023 in San Gimignano, by the Guardia di Finanza station in Poggibonsi.

Further investigations have identified a criminal network that is larger, younger and more autonomous than any previously known organization. This network included individuals with clearly defined roles and responsibilities, with logistical and operational bases in Tuscany and supply channels in Lombardy. The leaders of the gang, two Albanian nationals living between Castelfiorentino and Colle Val d'Elsa, established strategies and supply channels, detention and storage locations, the selling prices of narcotics, as well as their recipients.

Their trusted contacts managed drug depots, the transfer of narcotics and were responsible for preparing shipments to be delivered to customers, receiving the proceeds from the sales: many couriers were then also tasked with the task of “custodians”. Some of the suspects were officially employed as van drivers/couriers for “third-party road freight companies” and used this work to simulate the distribution of products by using plastic transport bags to conceal the quantities of drugs to be delivered to customers.

This feature facilitated the conspiracy to commit the alleged crimes, as drug sales were carried out by simulating shipments under the brand of a well-known international shipping and shipping company, the media informs . During the investigations, between 2023 and 2024, 17 kilograms of cocaine, 18 kilograms of hashish and 1 kilogram of marijuana were seized in Castelfiorentino, Colle Val d'Elsa and Busto Arsizio.
