Scientist who was studying nuclear fusion is found murdered in his apartment!

US authorities are investigating the murder of a prominent Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor, who was shot to death in his apartment near Boston.

The victim is Nuno Gomes Loureiro, 47, a professor of nuclear science and engineering and director of the Center for Plasma Science and Nuclear Fusion at MIT. He was shot Monday night in his Brookline apartment and died hours later in hospital.

According to police, a neighbor heard several loud explosions, while the perpetrators are suspected to have fled the scene. So far, no arrests have been made and the case is being treated as an active homicide investigation.

Loureiro was married and the father of three. He had a distinguished academic career, studying in Portugal and the United Kingdom, before joining the MIT staff in 2016. In 2024, he was appointed director of the research center dedicated to the study of plasmas and nuclear fusion.

His research focused on nuclear fusion energy, considered a clean and virtually limitless energy source with the potential to help combat climate change. His death has sparked speculation, although authorities have not given any indication that the crime is related to his scientific work.
