Europe Day/ How Robert Schuman's vision changed the history of the continent and laid the foundations of the EU

On May 9, the European Union marks Europe Day, a date associated with the idea of creating a united and peaceful Europe.
This day honors former French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman, who in 1950 proposed the idea of close cooperation between European countries through the joint production of coal and steel.
This initiative was considered the first step towards European integration and later led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, which included France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
This cooperation then evolved into the European Economic Community in 1957 and later into the European Union, as it is known today.
Schuman's idea was supported by German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, with the aim of building a lasting peace between countries that had previously been adversaries in war.
Economic cooperation was seen as a way to avoid past conflicts and strengthen ties between European states.
Today, the European Union consists of 27 countries and represents one of the largest integration projects in the world. The Montanunion, as it was originally called, no longer exists, but its decisions and principles continue to be part of the foundation of the EU.
