"There is no shortcut to Europe"/ Gonzato: EU integration depends only on reforms and merit

At the opening of Europe Week in Albania, European Union Ambassador Silvio Gonzato spoke about the country's EU membership process and the steps needed to move forward.
He focused on the fact that the path to the European Union has no "shortcuts" and is based solely on merit and concrete reforms.
According to him, Albania must continue strengthening the rule of law, the fight against corruption and organized crime, and improving the functioning of democratic institutions.
Gonzato recalled that these areas are the most important part of negotiations with the EU and that they are opened first and closed last, showing the importance they have in the integration process.
He also linked the enlargement process to the geopolitical situation in Europe, citing the EU's support for Ukraine and the importance of security and stability on the continent.
According to him, enlargement remains one of the European Union's main tools to strengthen democracy and stability in the region, while Albania and other candidate countries must continue reforms to move forward in this process.
