EMRI/ Sentenced to 6 years in prison for drug trafficking, Europe's most wanted trafficker arrested in Mexico

The Mexican government has arrested a suspected drug trafficker who was on the European Union's "most wanted" list.
The news was announced by Mexico's Security Minister, Omar García Harfuch, who announced that 48-year-old Hungarian Janos Balla, also known by the pseudonym "Daniel Takacs", was detained in the southern state of Quintana Roo.
According to authorities, Balla had been sentenced in the European Union to six years in prison for smuggling drugs and psychotropic substances. He was also the subject of a red notice from Interpol, which requests international cooperation for the arrest of wanted persons.
The arrest was made possible thanks to the cooperation between Mexican and Hungarian authorities. Through the exchange of information and investigative work, his location was identified in the municipality of Benito Juárez, where a coordinated operation was carried out that led to his arrest.
Following his arrest, Balla was placed in detention by the National Migration Institute in Mexico, while authorities are verifying his status and preparing procedures for his deportation to Europe.
The arrest is seen as another significant success in the fight against organized crime under Claudia Sheinbaum's presidency. She has pursued a tougher approach to drug cartels, distancing herself from the previous "hugs, not bullets" policy of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
Meanwhile, relations between Mexico and the United States have played a significant role in this war. US President Donald Trump has pressured Mexico to strengthen measures against drug trafficking, even threatening military action and using economic tariffs as a tool of influence.
In this context, Mexico has increased cooperation with the United States, transferring dozens of cartel suspects for prosecution. However, these actions have drawn criticism from some groups and families of those arrested, who claim that the transfers were carried out without respecting legal extradition procedures.
