The land is slipping. And along with the land, the life of an entire village is slipping.
For days, a massive landslide has put the lives of residents of the Hoxha neighborhood, in the village of Spathar in Librazhd, in direct danger. At least 7 houses have been severely damaged, while 30-40 families are in critical danger. Residents are sleeping outside, keeping watch day and night, and waiting for the moment when the earth can bury them alive.
“ We sleep with dreams, for fear that it is collapsing ,” says one resident. Another testifies: “If we had not fled 10 minutes ago, 4-5 of us would have died .” The landslide has ruptured water pipes, isolated the area and left families without water, roads and shelter. “We are without life. Without a house, without water, without roads.”
The only solution offered to them is a one-year lease. “ They tell us: find a house to rent. But after a year, where will I go ?” – ask the residents. Among them are 90-year-olds, families with children and people who live only on social assistance. “You can’t live on 4 thousand lek in assistance.”
The state has known about this danger for 12 years, but the files have been recycled from one office to another, without any concrete solution. Meanwhile, the ground continues to move. “ This is a catastrophe worse than an earthquake ,” say the residents, who call on the government: “ Build us two rooms and save our lives . ”
