Gjadri camp to be used for repatriation of migrants, European Commission: Italian government decree in line with EU law

The European Commission is aware of recent developments regarding the decree adopted by the Italian government to turn the Gjadri centre in Albania into a detention and repatriation centre for migrants.
Brussels says this decision is "in accordance with European law, as Italian legislation will be applied at the center, and we are monitoring the implementation of the Italy-Albania protocol, maintaining constant contact," Italian media report.
This was stated by a European Commission spokesperson in response to questions about the decree approved on Friday by the Italian government.
"As for innovative solutions, we have stated that we are ready to consider them, always in accordance with EU and international law obligations, as well as with respect for fundamental rights," said Markus Lammert, spokesperson for Home Affairs and Immigration at the European Commission, during a press conference.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, speaking in a video message sent to the Border Security Summit, said, "Fighting illegal immigration also means promoting legal immigration and reaffirming the principle that it is up to each nation, not traffickers, to decide who should and should not enter its territory."
"With the British Prime Minister - continued Meloni - we also agree that we should not be afraid to imagine and build innovative solutions, like the one launched by Italy with Albania. A model criticized at first, but which has subsequently gathered more and more consensus, to the point that today the European Union is proposing the creation of repatriation centers in third countries. This means that we were right."
