Conflict over Vlora Airport, the famous Swiss company cancels flights

The opening of the new Vlora International Airport in Albania is facing a new delay, a development that is forcing Swiss airline Chair Airlines to cancel its plans to begin flights to the new destination.
Chair Airlines was to become the first airline to serve the new airport, with two weekly flights between Zurich and Vlora starting on June 26. However, according to the company, the airport failed to secure the required permits in time and is now not expected to open during the summer season.
At the heart of the conflict is a heated dispute between the project's investors. The controversies recently entered a new phase, after Albania's Supreme Court ruled in favor of Mabco, overturning previous decisions that had suspended its rights to the airport management company.
Beyond the legal dispute, the project continues to be at the center of negative environmental reactions. The airport is being built near the Narta Lagoon, an internationally protected wetland area and an important stopover for migratory birds, including flamingos.
The proximity to the lagoon has caused repeated interventions by environmental organizations, the European Commission, the European Parliament and international nature protection organizations, which express concerns both about the impacts on the ecosystem and the risks that may be created for aviation safety due to the presence of large bird populations.
