"Pressure on judges is increasing", KLGJ: Such attitudes harm their

The High Judicial Council has reacted to the pressure on judges and the judiciary, which has been increasing.

Through a statement, the Supreme Court of Justice says that it understands the critical positions and opinions expressed by public officials or private entities, and in particular by the written and audiovisual media, which contribute to increasing the transparency and effectiveness of the judicial system.

"However, recently, there has been a worrying "pressure" on judges and the judiciary, which has an increasing tendency, as well as the emergence of some positions or statements with a significant impact on informing public opinion, which, in addition to violating the human rights of judges due to the exercise of their duties, also seriously endanger the performance of their legal functions."

"The High Judicial Council reiterates that such positions violate the image and dignity of judges, as well as undermine the independence of the judiciary. The High Council, in compliance with its constitutional duty, is in defense of the integrity of judges and the judicial system and calls on them to avoid such statements, which attempt to influence the judicial system," the statement said.

The High Judicial Council understands the critical positions and opinions expressed by public officials or private entities, and in particular by the written and audiovisual media, which contribute to increasing the transparency and effectiveness of the judicial system.

But recently, there has been a worrying "pressure" on judges and the judiciary, which has an increasing tendency, as well as the emergence of some positions or statements with a visible impact on informing public opinion, which, in addition to violating the human rights of judges due to the exercise of their duties, also seriously endanger the performance of their legal functions.

The High Judicial Council reiterates that such positions harm the image and dignity of judges, as well as undermine the independence of the judiciary. The High Council, in compliance with its constitutional duty, is in defense of the integrity of judges and the judicial system and calls on them to avoid such statements, which attempt to influence the judicial system.

As in any democratic society, judges are guarantors of equality before the law. Consequently, the exercise of their function must be independent and free from any form of influence, subject only to the Constitution and the laws.

The High Judicial Council brings to the attention of public opinion that it respects the irreplaceable mission of the media to inform the public about the activities of the judicial system, but on the other hand expects the media to respect the dignity of the court and the judge, by not transmitting information that contains offensive language or images that harm the image of the judge.

The Council calls on all public and private entities to respect the independence of the judiciary as one of the foundations of the rule of law. The only way to challenge a judicial decision is through the procedural means provided by law, by appealing to a higher court. Likewise, any complaint or allegation regarding the conduct or integrity of a judge should be addressed to the relevant institutions.
