Airports Council International (ACI), the most important global organization that brings together over 2,181 airports from 170 countries around the world, certifies the extraordinary year of Tirana International Airport (TIA), crowning it as the airport with the fastest passenger growth in Europe for 2024.

Referring to ACI data for Europe, processed by Ekofin.al, Tirana International Airport marked the largest increase in the number of passengers in 2024, not only in terms of airports in EU countries, but compared to all airports on the continent, with 47.5% more passengers than in 2023. According to official figures, 10.7 million passengers flew from Tirana International Airport last year.

Not only that, but TIA has won another "gold medal", that of the airport with the highest growth in Europe, compared to the pre-pandemic period, 2019, which is taken as a reference for aviation, also because a significant part of airports have not yet managed to reach the 2019 figures. Tirana International Airport, in 2024, marked an increase of 220.8% compared to the pre-pandemic period, like no other airport in Europe.

In December 2019, the concession contract was finalized, with the airport transferred to the management of the Kastrati Group. Since then, TIA has broken records year after year, now reaching its highest peak ever with the double titles: Fastest Growing Airport in Europe in 2024, compared to 2023, as well as compared to the pre-pandemic period, 2019.

During 2024, the best-performing markets in the EU were mainly those in Eastern and Southeastern Europe, Hungary and the Czech Republic (+18.9%), Estonia (+18%), Poland (+15.6%), Malta (+14.8%), Croatia (+13.7%), Italy (+11.0%) and Greece (+10.1%). In the rest of Europe, in addition to Albania's record, Moldova (+46.0%), Uzbekistan (+36.6%), Bosnia and Herzegovina (+33.8%) and Georgia (+23.9%) also performed well.

In terms of comparison with the pre-pandemic level, in addition to Albania, Uzbekistan (+185.9%) has also performed very well, followed by Kazakhstan (+74.7%), Kosovo (+72.1%), Armenia (+66.3%) and Azerbaijan (+59%). Growth was also recorded in the aviation markets of EU countries, such as Iceland (+24.2%), Malta (+22.5%), Greece and Poland (+22.1%), Portugal and Italy (+17.0%), Croatia (+16.6%) and Spain (+13.0%).

According to ACI's overall data, in 2024, European airports were used by 5 billion passengers, an increase of +7.4% compared to 2023 and +1.8% above pre-pandemic levels (2019). Meanwhile, 47% of European airports are still below their pre-pandemic levels. The 5 leading European airports in 2024 in terms of passenger numbers are London Heathrow, Istanbul Airport, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Amsterdam Schiphol and Madrid Airport.
