Today is Summer Day, the history and traditions of this ancient holiday

Today is Summer Day, a holiday with ancient origins. Summer Day began to be celebrated massively throughout Albania in recent decades, but its roots lie in the city of Elbasan.

Not only the roots, but also all the traditions, cuisine, and way of celebrating are exclusive to this area.

Elbasan has the merit of having kept this holiday, and all its rites, "alive" for centuries. Even during the dictatorship, when this holiday almost died out throughout Albania, in Elbasan it was celebrated as the biggest holiday of the year, every March 14th.

Also a detail of this celebration is the wearing of the "verores", a bracelet made of white and red threads that is tied to the wrist and untied when the first swallow is seen.

In some regions, summer flowers are hung on tree branches, for swallows to pick them up and bring good luck.

Tirana has also been organizing numerous activities for this day for years, such as concerts, fairs, and other activities.

The origin of the holiday has its roots in the temple of the Mountain Fairy built near the Shkumbin River in Elbasan.

The fairy was the god of hunting, forests, and nature and only appeared on March 14, which marked the beginning of Summer. At that time, only two seasons were known, winter and summer.

This legend was passed down from generation to generation and the Summer Day festival is known for its tradition and special cultural values. The symbol of this holiday is the ballokumja.

For this special day, every family has its own recipe preserved over the years.

Previously celebrated in Elbasan, it has now become a national holiday.
