Germany officially begins coalition talks to form new government

Coalition talks between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU/CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to form a new government in Germany have officially begun.

As 'Der Spiegel' reports, delegations from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), the Christian Social Union (CSU) and the SPD met in Berlin yesterday.

The working groups, each of the parties consisting of 16 members, have a deadline until March 24 to draft a coalition agreement, AA reports.

Tough negotiations between the parties are also expected on issues of immigration, budget, taxes, and defense.

The CDU/CSU and SPD leaders are said to have imposed strict rules on working group members to prevent information leaks during negotiations.

The final reports of the working groups will be presented to the party leaders.

If a coalition agreement is drawn up, it must be approved by the relevant committees of the three parties. The SPD also wants its members to approve the agreement.
