"Talks with Putin were fruitful," Donald Trump says when the Russia-Ukraine war could end

United States President Donald Trump said on Friday that it is "very likely" that the war between Russia and Ukraine will end after "fruitful" talks between American officials and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.
"We had very good and productive talks yesterday with the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, and there is a very good chance that this terrible and bloody war will finally end," Trump said in a post on Truth Social, adding that he had asked Putin to spare the lives of Ukrainian troops who are "completely surrounded."
The US envoy, Steve Witkoff, held a lengthy meeting with Putin in Moscow on Thursday evening.
In his tweet, Trump did not say whether he had spoken to Putin himself. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters in Moscow on Friday that Putin had sent Trump a message about his proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine, following a meeting in Moscow with special envoy Witkoff.
"When Mr. Witkoff sends all the information to President Trump, we will determine the time of the conversation [between Trump and Putin]. There are reasons to be cautiously optimistic," Peskov said.
Putin said on Thursday that Russia agrees with the United States' proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine, but added that there are details that need to be resolved first, such as supplying Kiev with Western weapons.
The Russian leader also said that any agreement reached must lead to a long-term peace that addresses the root causes of the war, likely referring to NATO expansion.
The Kremlin said there was reason for "cautious optimism" about US President Donald Trump's proposal, but Ukraine has questioned Moscow's sincerity about ending the war, which has now entered its fourth year.
In a video released late on March 13, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky questioned Putin's motives, saying the Russian leader was willing to reject the proposal but was afraid to tell Trump.
"Therefore, in Moscow, these conditions are being imposed on the idea of a ceasefire, so that nothing happens or nothing happens for as long as possible," Zelensky said.
Putin is facing a dilemma after delegations from Kiev and Washington agreed earlier this week – during a meeting in Saudi Arabia – to a 30-day ceasefire proposed by Trump, placing responsibility for peace in Moscow's hands.
Trump has made ending Russia's more than three-year occupation of Ukraine a top priority since taking office in January, quickly sending senior officials to Moscow and Kiev to pave the way for talks.
On Wednesday, Trump called on Russia to accept a 30-day ceasefire, warning that he would impose additional sanctions on it if it rejected the US proposal.
The Kremlin leader said the proposal contains unanswered questions, such as what will be done with Ukraine's incursion into the Russian Kursk region.
"If we have a ceasefire, does that mean everyone there will leave?" Putin said.
Ukraine launched a surprise incursion into Kursk in August last year, seizing a swath of Russian territory in the hope of exchanging it for its own once peace talks begin.
But that strategy may now be backfiring, as Russian forces are slowly pushing the Ukrainians back out of Kursk, reclaiming more than half of the territory initially captured by Ukraine.
Among other concerns the Russian leader raised about the ceasefire proposal is whether the 30-day period will be used by the West to rearm Ukraine or train its forces.
He also raised the question of how the ceasefire will be monitored along a front line of nearly 2,000 kilometers. “Who will determine where and who has violated the ceasefire?” he said.
Experts had warned that Putin would likely try to drag out ceasefire talks, as his forces have the advantage on the battlefield.
Russia aims to take back at least all four Ukrainian regions it claims to have annexed by November 2022: Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson.
A ceasefire now would make it impossible for her to achieve this goal./ REL
