Ukraine's military has dismissed Donald Trump's claim that thousands of its troops are surrounded in Russia's Kursk region as "false".
Its general staff instead accused Russia of fabricating reports for "political manipulation and to exert pressure on Ukraine and its partners."
The US president earlier today called on Vladimir Putin to spare the lives of "thousands of Ukrainian troops [who] are completely surrounded" by Russian forces.
His claim appeared to be based on Putin's assertion that Kiev's troops in Kursk, where Russia is rapidly gaining ground, had only two choices: "Surrender or die."
"This would be a horrific massacre, unseen since World War II," Trump warned.
In response, Ukraine announced that there was "no threat of encirclement of our units" in Kursk because its units had withdrawn to "more favorable" positions, which defense analysts confirmed.
