Students 'occupy' the streets of Belgrade, demand Vučić's
Thousands of citizens took to the streets of Belgrade on Friday evening to welcome students who are arriving in the Serbian capital on foot from the far reaches of the country, for a large protest to take place the next day.

While the first columns of pedestrians from southern and western Serbia were expected to arrive, several cyclists from Kragujevac were the first to reach the center of Belgrade.

Holding banners with the inscription "Students, Belgrade is yours", citizens welcomed the students to the capital with medals and flowers.

Students, who have been blocking faculties across Serbia for more than three months, have called for a protest in Belgrade on March 15.

The students on the blockade, among other things, demand criminal and political responsibility for the deaths of 15 people from the collapse of a shelter at the Novi Sad railway station on November 1, 2024.

Student guards have called on citizens not to approach the tractors and the fence leading to the Pioneer Park between the Serbian Presidency and the Serbian Parliament, where another group of students opposing the faculty blockades have been set up in camps.

A large number of tractors are parked around Pioneer Park in the center of the capital.

The group “Students 2.0” has been stationed in Pioneer Park since March 6. They call themselves “students who want to learn” and demand an end to the blockades.

A large police presence is seen in Pioneer Park.

Citizens on the other side of the fence chanted "shame" and "who are you protecting" at the police.

The camp of "students who want to learn" are mainly men, many of whom hide their faces with hats and hoods.

Tractors, a fence and police separate citizens, who are waiting for students near the Presidency and Parliament, from the camp in Pioneer Park. Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has said that the state "will take all measures" to ensure peace and warned of the arrest of those who cause incidents.

The government had previously accused the opposition of preparing the violence, while the students rejected the accusations.

The protest in Belgrade is considered the culmination of months of student-led demonstrations across Serbia./ REL
