EU fines 15 car manufacturers and ACEA association 458 million euros for creating car recycling cartel

The European Commission has fined 15 car manufacturers and the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA) a total of €458 million for participating in a cartel relating to vehicle recycling.
The Commission's investigation has revealed that these companies and organisations coordinated their actions to manipulate the way vehicle recycling is managed, in breach of European Union competition rules.
However, some companies have received reduced fines for cooperating with the investigating authorities. Mercedes-Benz, for example, did not receive any fines for disclosing the agreement to the European Commission, aiding the investigation and providing important information.
Meanwhile, the company Stellantis has benefited from a 50% reduction in the fine, paying only 74.9 million euros, after its cooperation with the Commission to shed light on the details of the cartel.
The Commission has stressed the importance of cooperation from suspected parties in the fight against anti-competitive practices and has warned that it will continue to monitor the automotive industry to ensure that competition rules are respected.
This decision comes after a period of in-depth investigations and a detailed analysis of the actions of these companies, which had influenced the way used vehicle recycling was managed, undermining free competition and creating unfair conditions for others in the market.
