The dynamics of the war between the inhabitants of a village in Crete, Greece

A serious event of shocking proportions occurred on Saturday afternoon in the village of Vorizia, in the Heraklion area of Crete, where an armed attack left two dead and two injured, including a child.

According to initial reports from Greek media, the incident occurred in retaliation for an explosive device being placed the night before in a house under construction, linked to one of the families involved in the conflict. As a result, an armed group attacked the village, burning houses and vehicles.

The Greek Ministry of Civil Protection has issued a red alert, describing the incident as the most serious in recent years in Crete. Large police forces have been sent to the area to restore order and prevent the situation from escalating.

Special forces from Athens, led by the head of the Hellenic Police, Lieutenant General Dimitris Mallios, and the director of the Directorate for Combating Organized Crime, Lieutenant General Fotis Ntuitsis, have arrived on the island. They are accompanied by the deputy commander of the DAOE, Brigadier General Spyros Tsardakas, with a 10-member special unit from the unit known as the “Greek FBI.”

These forces are working in cooperation with local police to identify and arrest the perpetrators, as well as to investigate the causes that led to the armed massacre.

At the same time, an EKAM (special anti-terrorist forces) unit has been permanently deployed to the village, to guarantee security and prevent any new clashes between rival families.

EKAB (National Emergency Medical Service) forces have carried out six emergency transports to Heraklion hospitals.

Two injured women were taken from the Moira Health Center to the Heraklion University Hospital (PAGNI). Two injured men were transferred from a private clinic to the same hospital. An unconscious woman was taken to PAGNI, while an unconscious man was transported to the “Venizelio” hospital.

Due to the high risk in the area, ambulances remained in safe positions for several hours until permission was given to approach the village.

According to initial police sources, the clash stemmed from an old feud between two local families, which flared up after the bomb attack the night before. One side then took up arms and attacked the village in retaliation.

The police have completely surrounded the village of Vorizia, while avoiding contact between rival families, distributing the injured to different hospitals to avoid new incidents.

Greek authorities describe the situation as "critical," while fears of an escalation of violence remain high. Investigations into the killings, injuries and arson are ongoing, while large police forces remain on full alert in the Heraklion area.
