G7 discusses Ukraine as US resumes aid to Kiev

Foreign ministers from the world’s seven most developed countries (G7) will gather for a multi-day meeting in Canada. Discussions will focus on supporting Ukraine in its fight against three years of Russian aggression.
The talks follow a decision by the United States to resume military and intelligence assistance to Ukraine after senior officials from the two countries met in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
After nearly eight hours of talks, Ukraine announced on Tuesday its readiness to accept a US proposal for “an immediate 30-day ceasefire” in the war with Russia. The proposal must also be accepted by the Kremlin.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed the proposal, saying on Wednesday on the social network 'X' that it is "an important and correct step towards a just peace for Ukraine."
"We stand with Ukraine and the United States and welcome the proposals from the Jeddah meeting. Now it's up to Putin," Chancellor Scholz wrote.
The Kremlin said on Wednesday it expected to learn from Washington the details of the ceasefire proposal, while senior Russian officials said on condition of anonymity that the agreement should take into account the advances Russia has made on the battlefield.
Russia's Foreign Ministry said negotiations with U.S. officials could take place this week.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters Tuesday night that Ukraine had taken a concrete step toward ending the war.
"Now we will send this proposal to the Russians. We hope that they will say yes, that they will say yes to peace. Now the ball is in their court," he said.
National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, who was part of the U.S. delegation in Jeddah, said he would speak with his Russian counterpart "in the coming days."
NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte will visit the White House on Thursday. All of these discussions are part of efforts to advance the peace process.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not attend the U.S.-Ukraine talks, but in a speech he released Tuesday night he called the ceasefire plan a "positive proposal . "/VOA
