Iran rejects Trump's statements about destroying its military forces

Iran has strongly rejected US President Donald Trump's claims about the state of the country's naval and air forces.

"American statements that the Iranian navy has been destroyed contradict developments in the region," said Mohammad Akbarzadeh, political vice president of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' naval forces.

"The United States claims that the Iranian navy has been destroyed," Akbarzadeh added, according to the state news agency IRNA. "Then the question arises: why is the Strait of Hormuz still closed and why can no tankers pass through it?" he said.

President Trump had written this week on his Truth Social platform that Iran's air and naval forces "are gone" and that the country's missiles, drones and other weapons are being destroyed.

Nearly two weeks after the United States and Israel launched major strikes against Tehran, the Iranian leadership continues to retaliate, increasing pressure on Washington, its allies and the global economy.

The Revolutionary Guards have maintained a near-blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow passage between Iran and Oman that is vital to global oil transport. The strait, about 55 kilometers wide, is one of the most important routes for global oil exports.
