"Why did you ease sanctions on Russia?", Merz asks the US for explanations: It was the wrong decision

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz was more critical than Macron about the easing of sanctions on Russian oil. Calling the US decision wrong, he said he had not been informed in advance about the move. Merz demanded an explanation from Washington about the motives behind the decision.
" Unfortunately, Russia continues to show no willingness to negotiate. That is why we will and must increase the pressure on Moscow. I want to make this very clear: easing sanctions now, for whatever reason, is something we consider wrong. We will continue our support for Ukraine. We will not be discouraged or distracted from this because of the war in Iran ," he said.
" There was a very clear position from six members of the G7 that this is not the right signal. Then we learned this morning that the US government has apparently decided otherwise. Once again, we believe that this is wrong. There is currently a problem with prices, but not with quantity. Therefore, I would like to know what other motives have prompted the US government to take this decision ," the chancellor continues.
